Biomass is biological material from living (or recently living) organisms. In relation to energy, biomass is often plant based materials but can be from an animal source. When using biomass, there is a closed carbon cycle where no new carbon is added to the atmosphere. Biomass takes in carbon as it is grown (when referring to plant based biomass) and releases the same amount back into the atmosphere when used as fuel. When correctly managed, biomass is a sustainable fuel that could deliver a significant reduction in net carbon emissions when compared to fossil fuels.

Bio fuels

Any fuel whose energy is derived from biological carbon fixation is called a biofuel. The production of liquid fuels from grains, oil seeds, straw and wood as well as those materials themselves are the basic biofuels. The liquids are often called bioethanol and biodiesel and can be used to power transportation such as buses.

Wind / solar energy

  • Wind energy is a form of harnessing the power of the wind to convert it into electricity. It is an alternative renewable energy. Wind power is widely distributed, clean, produces no greenhouse gas emissions during operation and uses little land. The most common form of harnessing wind power is the wind turbine, usually situated in large wind farms.
  • Solar energy is the light and heat of the sun harnessed and converted to electricity. The International Energy Agency states that "the development of affordable, inexhaustible and clean solar energy technologies will have huge longer-term benefits." It will increase countries' energy security through reliance on an indigenous, inexhaustible and mostly import-independent resource, enhance sustainability, reduce pollution, lower the costs of mitigating climate change, and keep fossil fuel prices lower than otherwise. These advantages are global." There are two accepted forms of solar energy capture. Passive solar includes orientating a building towards the sun, selecting materials with favorable thermal mass/light dispersing properties, and designing spaces that naturally circulate air." Active solar refers to the use of photovoltaic panels and solar thermal collectors to harness the energy.
